Klostermølle & Sukkertoppen electric bike tour

History and nature

History and Hilltop

The tour is somewhat shorter than the previous one and gives room for a little more freedom. The first stop on the tour is Klostermølle,a more than 100-year-old paper mill located on the remains of an old Benedictine monastery. Here there are old listed buildings, a small exhibition and a lookout tower overlooking Jutland’s largest lake, Mossø.

A small trek takes you along the Gudenå to the bottom of Sukkertoppen, the hike up is steep and can be slippery, but only 80 meters takes you to the top at 108 meters. The view, on the other hand, is overwhelming.

After combined beautiful experiences of nature and history, we ride a short distance to Det lille Røgeri, where lunch is served. Enjoy a vaste selection of home-smoked fish dishes.

Then the trip goes towards Holmely, we pass Nedenskov lake on the way where it is possible to take a swim.

Notable

The outlet of the Gudenå River at Mossø (Klosterkær) has undergone a nature restoration project and has today been returned to its old form.

When the monks arrived at Klostermølle in the 12th century, they saw opportunities in the fall of the Gudenå, and they built a 1,200 m long canal below the Sukkertoppen to lead the water from the Gudenå to a water mill on the banks of Mossø. Thereby the old stream was dried up (Døde Å). Now the old stream and water area at Døde Å have been restored. Døde Å has been deepened and widened and thus Gudenå’s original course has been re-established, just as the original delta arms have been cleaned so that the brook can more easily flow out and deal with floods. Grazing livestock is used for nature conservation, which in turn provides good conditions for certain plant and animal species, creating the possibility of a completely new exciting nature type in this new delta.
